This learning activity aims to bridge the gap between media literacy and ecoliteracy by helping students become more aware of the physical ecosystem where they live. Students engage in a series of activities designed to highlight the disconnect between their familiarity with media environments and their knowledge of local ecosystems. They explore plant identification, analyze the influence of media on our environmental perceptions, and examine the interconnectedness of media and the environment. The goal is to promote an integrated understanding of how media shapes our understanding of nature, and how both media and the environment are interconnected aspects of our world.
Learning outcomes
- Analyze the difference in familiarity between media environments and natural ecosystems.
- Utilize technology (Pl@ntNet app) to identify and learn about local plant species.
- Compare and contrast the key principles of media literacy and ecoliteracy.
- Create a mind map illustrating personal media ecosystems and their potential environmental impacts.
- Demonstrate increased awareness of local plant species to counteract the phenomenon of “plant blindness.”
